Do I need to prime?

Do I need a primer?

A good paint finish starts with what’s underneath. Primer helps prepare the surface for painting, creating a sound base for your colour and finish.

You may need a primer if you're painting:

  • Bare or new surfaces such as plaster, wood or metal
  • Stained or problem areas where marks could show through the finished paint
  • Difficult surfaces where paint may need a little extra help to adhere
  • Surfaces in poor condition that need some preparation before you begin

Do I always need to prime?

Not necessarily. If you're repainting a sound, previously painted surface, you may not need a separate primer. Some paints are also designed to be used on certain surfaces without a separate primer.

Cove Tip:
Before you open the tin, take a good look at the surface you're painting. Good preparation is just as important as your choice of paint.

If you're unsure what you need, we're always happy to help you get it right before you start.
